Taylor Lautner jokes about ‘praying for John Mayer,’ Swifties play along

Actor Taylor Lautner, one of the ex-boyfriend subjects of Taylor Swift’s Speak Now, has spoken about how he was feeling when it was announced that the latter would release her own version of the album.

“I think it’s a great album,” he said in an interview.

The Twilight star also clams that he is ‘feeling safe’ regarding the possibility that he might be the subject of an unreleased track, or what the singer-songwriter marks as a ‘vault track.’

The actor confirmed then that “Back To December,” a Speak Now track that is familiar to any listener, whether a Swiftie or not, is about his breakup with Swift, which he claims is a pretty sweet breakup song.

Lautner then joked about sending some prayers to a man named John.

That ‘John’ that he mentioned is none other than singer John Mayer, also one of the ex-boyfriend subjects of the album. The track that is famously known to have a connection with the Mayer breakup is the song “Dear John”, which is more scathing.

Mayer opened up to Rolling Stone in 2012 and said that he somehow felt ‘humiliated’ by the song and then claimed that name-dropping him was a “really lousy thing to do.”

“It made me feel terrible,” Mayer said, “because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that.”

Swifties on Twitter also joked around with Lautner’s remarks.

That joke that Lautner made during the recent interview became a trend on Twitter.  “Praying for John” has been the subject of over 15.3K tweets as of this writing.

One tweet claimed that Lautner’s joke—to them—will become a new and favorite way to describe the album.

Another tweet claimed that Mayer should be terrified upon the re-release.

Lastly, one tweet lauded Lautner and claimed that he was the ‘best ex-boyfriend’ Swift had.

Lautner and Swift’s friendship has been on good terms despite their breakup. The actor recently spoke about Swift on an episode of his and his wife’s podcast, The Squeeze, addressing the infamous VMAs moment when rapper Kanye West interrupted the singer-songwriter’s award acceptance speech.

Swift recently announced on social media that she will officially release Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) while performing at the Nashville leg of her ‘Eras Tour’.

The said album will officially be out on July 7.
