Author behind children’s book about processing grief after her husband died now accused of his murder

Utahn author, Kouri Richins, who wrote a children’s book to help her own kids process their grief after her husband’s death last year, is now accused of his murder.

The mother of three was held without bail in Summit County facing aggravated murder charges and three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, last Monday (MDT).

According to a police interview, Kouri said that she was celebrating with her husband, Eric, in March last year, for closing a house for her business, where she made a Moscow Mule for Eric to drink.

In the court documents cited by KSLTV, Kouri was said to have left their bedroom to tend to one of their children and ended up sleeping in the child’s room. When she came back to their bedroom at around 3 AM, Eric was “cold to the touch,” and that is when she called 911.

It is stated in the court documents that Eric died due to an overdose, with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his body.

According to investigators, Kouri purchased $900 worth of fentanyl from a drug dealer six days before Eric was found dead on March 4, 2022.

In the court documents, it is said that it is not the first time Kouri tried to murder her husband. Last year, she purchased fentanyl from the same acquaintance when Eric became very ill on Valentine’s Day and told his friend that he thought his wife was trying to poison him.

Kouri will appear before a judge for a detention hearing on May 19 (MDT).

Her book, ‘Are You With Me?,’ which was dedicated to her “amazing husband and a wonderful father,” and had received positive feedback on Amazon with comments of how well-written and inspiring it is, has now been removed from the platform.
