Filmmaker James Gunn debunks ‘hating each other’ claim between Marvel and DC

Filmmaker James Gunn debunks the belief that the two superhero production companies, Marvel Studios and DC Studios are ‘hating each other.’ The director for both the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film franchise and the ‘Peacemaker’ series claims that it is a lie and says that both productions are teaming up on a mission that would bring people to theaters.

“People have this weird belief that Marvel and DC hate each other or somehow are polar opposites,” Gunn told Yahoo Entertainment. “But it’s just not the truth. I mean, listen, man, our job is the same. We want to get people into the theaters to see movies. That’s what matters. And I think that we work together to do that. And the more good Marvel movies are, the better it is for DC movies. The more good DC movies, the better it is for Marvel movies.”

He then claims that Marvel and DC are unlike sports teams that oppose each other and says that there could be two winners in the competition between the two productions.

“There’s not only one winner,” Gunn said. “There can be two winners because it matters who goes to see your movies and who enjoys ’em.”

Gunn has worked for both production outfits. His work at Marvel started in 2013 with the 2014 release of the first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy. The third volume of the film franchise is his final work there, in spite of his co-heading rival DC Studios in October 2022 alongside Peter Safran. Before the new gig, Gunn debuted with 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

As he co-heads DC, Gunn is set to create a new cinematic universe that spans movies, television series, and video games. He is also slated to write and direct Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, and The Brave and the Bold, which are focused on a Batman-Robin team-up.
