A Seoul National University student ate the “Comedian,” a well-known banana art piece taped to a white wall that was displayed at the Leeum Museum of Art.
Based on a report, the college student was filmed detaching the artwork from the wall in the museum where it was being displayed. After consuming the banana, the college student taped its peel back to the wall.
As to why he did such a thing, the student gave a surprising yet simple reason to the museum: he was hungry.

The duct-taped art piece was not only popular, but also very expensive. As a matter of fact, the comedian’s artwork was sold for the huge price of $120,000 in 2019.
This famous art piece was made by Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian artist who is known for his incredible installations.
Catellan was already informed about what happened in the artwork. However, the report stated that the artist did not give any reaction to the incident.
What happened in the South Korean museum was not the first time the famous banana was eaten.
According to a report, artist David Datuna, who called himself a “Hungry Artist,” also ate the artwork way back in 2019. This was also the time when the art piece was just bought by a private collector.
Datuna even posted what happened on his Instagram account.
“I love Maurizio Cattelan artwork and I really love this installation. It’s very delicious,” Datuna penned in his Instagram post in December 2019. The artist even called the incident a performance in the post.
Based on the same report, the event did not affect the value of Catellan’s artwork in any way. It was also noted in the report that the artwork can be replaced whenever it is needed.
It is unclear whether the college student was really hungry to be moved to disrupt an art installation, or is simply part of a stunt to boost interest around the already buzzworthy art piece.
