A few days after the first trailer of ‘The Marvels’ released, it garnered attention and controversy across the fandoms, and sadly not for good reasons. The trailer shows the return of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, with new additions to the cast and characters, featuring Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau (WandaVision) as part of the central characters in the movie. While the crossover between the characters should’ve inspired excitement and eagerness among the fans, the opposite occurred, with a staggering amount of dislikes and spiteful comments, turning the event into a festival for the trolls and the more toxic end of the fandom to have their inane fun.
Although, unfortunately, none of this is new. In her run as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson has received an entire spectrum of hate, criticism, and backlash over the years. Before the release of Captain Marvel, Rotten Tomatoes had to update their site policy to prevent angry fans and trolls from review-bombing the film before it was even released in theaters. The trailer for The Marvels currently has upwards of 300,000 dislikes, and in announcement of this fact, the popular Twitter Marvel community account ‘MCU Fanatics,’ posted:
#TheMarvels is now the most-disliked MCU Trailer on YouTube in its first 24 hourspic.twitter.com/LnIUm86qP4
— MCU Fanatics (@MCU_Fanatics) April 12, 2023
The amount of dislikes the trailer received is by no means a small number; even for trolls, that is an astonishing amount. As a comparison, Morbius, one of the worst-reviewed Marvel movies ever produced, becoming one of the internet’s favorite memes and punching bags, has only amassed 11,000 dislikes on YouTube since its trailer release.
And it would be off-brand for trolls to simply stop at disliking videos. Endless amounts of copypastas and comments have made their way into the trailer’s comment section to drown out any sight of positive replies and excited fans.
Most of the comments don’t even relate to the trailer, a wave of meme comments that don’t seem to have an end in sight. To show a few: “I love the part where Torreto said ‘I live life a quarter mile at a time.’ Really brought tears to my eyes,” “I like the part where Chris Pratt was like ‘Whhhat is this place?’ after falling in a tube. My favorite,” “1:57 Best Part. (The trailer is only 1:56 minutes long).”
Despite the barrage of hate comments and memes, a lot of fans are still excited about the movie’s release. The incessant trolling doesn’t change the fact that the trailer has more than 17 million views and at one point was the No. 9 trending video on YouTube. For all the non-toxic Marvel or movie fans out there, like with all your favorite things on the internet, blocking out and ignoring the trolls will suffice, they won’t take away from how excited you are for the movie or how much you’ll enjoy it.
The Marvels shows in theaters on July 28. Ensure you’re all caught up on what’s going on in the lives of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan in the MCU by streaming the Marvel movies in order.
