From renowned director Makoto Shinkai (of the hit anime films ‘Your name’ and ‘Weathering With you’) comes the newest blockbuster ‘Suzume No Tajimari’ which is slated for Philippine release soon this year.
On February 8, the movie’s distribution outfit announced that ‘Suzume’ will premiere soon in cinemas across the Philippines. The anime film was released in Japan last year, which comes at the heels of Shinkai’s two highest-grossing anime movies, ‘Your Name’ and ‘Weathering with You’ which premiered in 2016 and 2019, respectively.
‘Suzume No Tajimari’ is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy film produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho. Shortly after its release, it became one of Japan’s outstanding productions in the animation scene. In 2023, ‘Suzume’ became a major hit, ranking 10th in Japan’s highest-grossing anime film of all time—outranking Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Wind Rises’ which was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Recently, it was also nominated for the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival Awards, which will run from February 16 to February 26.
This modern road story follows Suzume, a 17-year-old girl from Kyushu, who meets a mysterious young man looking for a “door.” She then follows after him and discovers a door in the mountains with ruins. As she attempts to reach the door, it begins to open more portals, heading to several areas in Japan. As disasters come from the far side of the doors, the opened doors must be closed. The stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky—in that spot she roamed into, there was a sky that seemingly blended all of the time. Led by the magical doors, Suzume embarks on a new adventure.
‘Suzume No Tajimari’’s local release date has yet to be announced, but fans are expecting that it will hit local cinemas some time in March.
