Chadwick Boseman earns posthumous Emmy nomination for ‘What If…?’

Chadwick Boseman may no longer be with us, but his legacy continues.

On July 13, it was announced that Boseman has earned a posthumous Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category in the animated series What If…?.

Boseman reprised his role as T’Challa in a voice-over role for one episode of Marvel’s animated series What If…?, which imagines other timelines and conclusions for MCU characters. Boseman’s voice-over role on What if…? was his last performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before he died of colon cancer in August 2020. The series was aired shortly after his death.

This is not the first time that Boseman’s legacy is honored with a posthumous nod. In 2021, he also earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The late actor also won a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance in the same film in April 2021. His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, received the award on his behalf.

Boseman is not the only personality to receive a Posthumous Emmy Award nomination. Not just one but three nominations for the 74th Emmy Awards are given to Marvel Studios’ What If…?, including Outstanding Animated Program, and Character Voice-Over Performance nominations for both Chadwick Boseman and Jeffrey Wright.

Boseman was well-known for his role as T’Challa in Marvel’s superhero film Black Panther, which was the first ever superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination. The late actor was also known for starring in other leading roles in the films 42 and Marshall.

The 74th Emmy Awards will be telecast live on Monday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET. on NBC. On November 11, the Black Panther sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will be released in commemoration of the late actor.
