Divine Deconstructions: A Directing Thesis Festival opens this May 2022

Divine Deconstructions: A Directing Thesis Festival comprises the thesis productions of four directing majors who are currently navigating through the collective experience of emptiness and confusion in this modern day. Through the virtual stage, these directors explore the rediscovery and healing of one’s being, and the cyclical constructs that bring about discomfort and uncertainty. Here below are the four productions that would be featured during the festival:

Divine Deconstructions

A Noble State of Tension by Andie Villegas – May 22, 2022

“A Noble State of Tension” is a devised production that seeks to present an honest and nuanced portrayal of what it is to be a person of faith through questions on belief, doubt, and the struggle to discern the voice of the divine.

Kontra Mundum by Joseph Garay – May 25, 2022

“Kontra Mundum” is a deconstruction of Nick Joaquin’s “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino”. Inspired by the Japanese theater forms of Noh and Butoh, the deconstruction will tap into the often-unexplored spiritual core of the well-explored text: the metamorphosis, life, death, and rebirth of the Filipino spirit.

Imahen: Isang Pagbabagong-Anyo ng Mga Santong Tao by Mita Davila – May 27, 2022

“Imahen” is an adaptation of the classic Filipino play Mga Santong Tao by Tomas Remigio. Employing surrealism, the play attempts to reconstruct this male-written text — originally a satire against the oppressive Spanish colonization — into a story that aims to highlight the female experience.

with Loss by Bradly Hao – May 28, 2022

“with Loss” is an anthology that explores grief across different cultural and linguistic contexts. Through the portrayal of real-life accounts and documentary texts, the performance attempts to rediscover, acknowledge, and reflect on what it means to be in our current shared state of constant, permanent grief and loss.

Divine Deconstructions: A Directing Thesis Festival will be streamed live on the Divine Deconstructions Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ddthesisfestival on May 22, 25, 27, and 28 respectively at 8:00 PM.
