Say hello to the newest internet sensation: Trash Doves.

Just recently, images of this purple bird flooded the Facebook pages of The Verge, Vox, Polygon, Business Insider and I Fucking Love Science as an unhappy response to some of their posts. Even the New York Times Facebook page was not exempted from this phenomenon: one user filled their comment section with 90+ purple doves!

That must be one heck of an article, New York Times.

Just in case you’re wondering where these purple fellows are from, they were created by American artist Syd Weiler as part of a Facebook sticker set called Trash Doves.

After Trash Doves were released last January, it instantly became viral in Thailand because of a video that was posted on a Facebook page featuring the dancing cat with the headbanging purple dove:

According to Weiler, she was surprised to see her personal Facebook page likes spike from 700 to 35k, prompting her to create an official Facebook page for Trash Doves. She expressed her appreciation for her Thai fans’ support through a Trash Dove thank you note:

Though it is still unclear why there is a sudden interest over these purple headbanging birds, several memes have come up featuring Trash Doves.
