Mastering Work-Life Balance

PRESS RELEASE

Despite demands of the spotlight, TEDDY BOY LOCSIN JR., KAREN JIMENO, and CHIZ ESCUDERO achieve fulfillment in both career and personal life.

It takes hard work and determination to accomplish a goal, whether it’s life at home or corporate set-up at the office. Finding balance between doing great at work and making time for the family can be a challenge for every passionate individual.

For veteran journalist and former politician Teddy Boy Locsin Jr., hard work pays off when you do what you are passionate about. For lawyer and media personality Karen Jimeno, having an understanding partner who shares the same values makes her successful in juggling several jobs while being a good homemaker. Last but not least, lawyer, current senator and running 2016 vice-presidential candidate, Chiz Escudero, verdict is to smile a little more often rather than letting the small stuff weigh him down.

Discover how these three renowned personalities manage a competitive edge for their professional responsibilities and simultaneously enjoy finer things in life, as they dedicated time (despite their busy routines) for an exclusive photo shoot with globally famous polo shirt brand, Original Penguin by Munsingwear.

KAREN JIMENO

In 2011, the public eye started to notice the court trial beauty and female defender during the impeachment case of ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona. A practicing lawyer both in the Philippines and New York, Karen Jimeno’s looks has been paralleled to her substance as an established woman in her chosen field. Other than being profoundly involved in her job as a legal counsel, Karen extends her reach and spreads creativity through her hobbies, on-the-side work, and interests.

Being busy is natural for Karen. Besides her duties in a law firm, she teaches as a professor in one of Manila’s law schools. She is also the host of a news channel’s public affairs show on national TV that tackles legal concerns. Alongside with these, she writes a weekly column on motoring for a famous broadsheet. Karen finds writing about cars enjoyable. She shared: “Ever since I was a child, I have developed a love for cars as an art with its aesthetics and engineering. For me, it’s a fun type of work, because I’m really passionate on cars.I get to write creatively as well, which is different from legal writing.”

Married to an American investor, Karen is glad in her relationship with her husband who has become her supporter through the years. “Having a partner who enjoys simple things and respects your work boundaries is a good relationship to treasure, which helped me in nurturing my career and personal life,” she said. Asked on their plans in having children, Karen shares that it has been “one of the goals that she has not been successful yet.”

“What I love about my law profession is making a positive change in the lives of people,”she said. She reveals her advocacy on education with her recent position in Legal Education Board who holds lectures for deans of law schools nationwide. “My main advocacy is to enlighten voters on what automated election is all about and why we have to shift to it. Education is not just important in the academic setting—but in saving lives, increasing awareness, and empowering people,” said Karen, passionately.

TEDDY BOY LOCSIN JR.

Five years ago, former politician and journalist Teddy Boy Locsin Jr. ended his three-term reign in the First District of Makati. Over the years, indelible marks of excellence have been left in the hearts of many through his public service in both the press and politics. Raised in a family tangled in the world of publishing since the 1930s with the popular weekly political magazine Philippine Free Press, his last assignments as an editorial writer featured coverage stories on national hero Benigno Aquino before the Martial Law. When the publishing office closed during the Marcos regime, Teddy Boy practiced law at the Angara law office. Close to the end of 80’s, he became the speechwriter and legal counsel of late Philippine President Corazon Aquino (Cory) in Malacañang Palace.

Teddy Boy founded three significant press bodies between the late 1980s and early 1990s—The Daily Globe, the reopening of Philippine Free Press magazine, and Today Newspaper. Aside from the help he gave to people in need and the laws he authored in Congress, his experience in politics taught him rules in life: “not to grab credit” and “never press your advantage.” Learning from challenges, staying grounded, and taking actions on immediate concerns of the citizens made his experience in public service worthwhile. “My public service was a great experience. As a young writer before, I looked down at politicians. But when I entered politics, I realized how hard it was to be a politician and it was a good lesson,” said Teddy Boy.

For more than three decades, his passion on writing has never ceased. At 66, Teddy Boy is the host of TEDitorial, an editorial segment in a late night newscast of a giant TV network that has been going on air in the Philippine shores since 1966. He previously did several kinds of writing, such as long articles, essays, and speeches, but he shared that his current role in news shows on television made him realize the importance of presenting news shorter but better with relevant information. “I enjoy this, because I’ve tried different forms of writing; but here, it’s entertaining for viewers. I also learned how to listen to people who are experts in their fields. Before, we used to do a one-hour show for one topic. But now, we’re doing four stories for one hour. In doing editorials, we make sure the treatment is straight to the point and well-thought-out,” said Teddy Boy.

Right now, Teddy Boy’s schedule goes writing his script in the morning and hosting his newscast in the evening, with swimming and exercising in between. Now that his children are all grown up and working abroad, he spends time organizing his house and reading daily in his own library with thousands of books.

CHIZ ESCUDERO

5

Still yet uncovering the potentialities of what his beloved country has to improve on and striving to bring in meaningful change, Chiz Escudero is a courageous soul that realized his unrelenting interest and passion in the political field even before the start of his career at age 22. From being the municipal councilor of Sorsogon to now being part of the 2016 running vice-presidential candidates, the current senator has yet a lot of political journeys to go through and long-term goals to proliferate.

He has a rational, fair, and simple approach in achieving work-lifestyle balance and that is by not eating politics for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He makes it to a point to work when he needs to work but assures to spend quality time with his family during weekends. In so doing, he gets to be energized and reinvigorated when he gets back to work. He also expresses his love for cooking. “There are no variables. Everything is within your control. Unlike life for politics or love, where almost everything is a variable, cooking somehow preserves my sanity. If I make a mistake, I know the exact outcome. Sometimes in life and love, even if I do not commit a mistake, the outcome is still different”. Getting a chance to prepare meals keeps his feet on the ground and somehow makes him feel that at least something is still within his control and reach.

Interestingly, after Chiz’s stay on the government, he plans to go back where his love for the political field blossomed—teaching. He has every intention of going back to teaching as he used to teach law at UP College of Law. In fact, he took up a Master’s degree so that he can teach. Sharing his experiences and thoughts on the government in the bounds of the classroom would without a doubt rouse and exciting discussion in molding future lawyers.

Almost a year married with actress, Heart Evangelista, Chiz makes it to a point that they will all live and settle together in one roof three years from now. The colorful past that the couple shared is what made their bond stronger than ever as they both understand that their jobs are challenging on entirely different levels. Both happily married, they plan of having a baby of their own after campaign and elections.
