(Editor’s note: We asked all our delegates and student representatives to answer five questions regarding their attendance in this year’s Cannes Lions. First to dish out answers to our pressing set of questions is Troy Bautista, student representative at the Roger Hatchuel Academy in Cannes.)

POP! Team: What was the first thing you put inside your bag when you were packing your luggage for Cannes?
Troy: A small notebook! Coming in, I was sure there was no other place I could get such brilliant ideas other than Cannes. I know that I would have to write countless quotes and ideas, which I can share and use for life!
POP! Team: What was the first thing that came to your mind when you saw all these representatives from different countries during the festival briefing?
Troy: First thing that came to my mind after seeing all the countries was, “wow, advertising is truly a global language which all of us can understand!” It was so nice seeing so many nationalities share the same passion.
POP! Team: What exactly was running through your mind when you were working on the project, particularly one hour before the submission time?
Troy: Well, I’m lucky enough not to be in the competition, but we had to submit an idea with a mixed group. 1 hour prior, all I was really thinking was, “did I represent the Philippines well enough?” I wanted my group mates to see the potential of the Filipino and I’d like to think that I did show them that.
POP! Team: Give us a quick summary of your Cannes Lions experience.
Troy: My Cannes Young Lions experience has been a major wake up call. It opened my eyes to the power of marketing and advertising. It was here that I realized how much good you can contribute to society no matter what country you are from.
POP! Team: Do you think the Philippines has a shot at owning a Lion? Yes or No? Why?
Troy: OF COURSE! I absolutely believe that the Philippines has a chance in Cannes year in and year out just because of how natural it is for us to connect. Evidence of that is how easily Filipinos can live and thrive in other countries. That natural inclination to connect is the key to creating great work and I believe we’ll get more success in Cannes in the future. Hopefully I’ll still be part of it!
