Girl, yes you can!

Modess’ Turn Kaba to Kaya campaign empowers young girls to turn their negativity and fears
into positivity and encouragement.

Chismis, self-doubt, and even bullying are negative issues ever present in a girl’s life, even in
social media. Social media is a fun way to share photos, connect with others and post selfies,
but it can also be a source of negative comments from others. Destructive words posted can
cause girls to feel insecure, doubt and kaba, preventing them from doing what they want to do.

With Modess’ Turn Kaba to Kaya campaign, girls are encouraged to empower each other with
positive words in order to transform their fears, self-doubts and insecurities to confidence and
kaya.

Bringing this movement to life was Modess’ Turn Kaba to Kaya Interactive Installation set-up last
June 8-10 in Market-Market Activity Center. It featured three stations that illustrated the power of
words:

Cleared from Self-Doubt—shows the effect of words on one’s self-image through an interactive
booth of mirrors. Girls were invited to look at the kaba mirror (a fun-house mirror that alters your
reflection) to see how negative words distort how they see themselves. Then they were invited to
turn kaba to kaya by turning the doorknob and opening the structure door to reveal a clear
mirror enhanced by lights, showing how positive words can make them see the best version of
themselves.

Freedom from Fear—shows how words impact the way girls react to the world or other people
around them. Walking into the Kaba side of the structure, girls see and hear negative words that
cause feelings of seclusion. This shows how chismis, bullying and even self-doubt, can isolate
them from the world. But turning the knob to open the Kaya side, they’ll start hearing inspiring,
positive phrases that give them clearer view of the world and excitement to take part in it.

Rising from Negativity—shows how words impact girls physically. Girls are asked to put on the
Kaba vest (a vest with weights and outfitted with snide remarks) and jump on the trampoline to
feel the heaviness of negativity. Turning the knob onto the next module reveals Kaya wings that
let you feel the uplift of encouraging words, giving you the confidence to soar and conquer
your fears.

Following these three stations and with the knowledge of how powerful words can be, Modess’
final installation called girls to make the move and contribute to the Pledge for Positivity Board.
Girls were asked to pin encouraging messages for friend on the board, post a photo of the
message on their social media accounts, tag that friend and use the hashtag
#TurnKabaToKaya.

With the belief that every girl can inspire and encourage others to see beauty in themselves,
Modess invites all girls to pass on an encouraging word to a friend and join the movement of
turning Kaba to Kaya.
