Battlefield 2042 has received tons of criticism from fans, and as a result, developers are delaying the game’s first season of live content.
Battlefield 2042 is the latest installment in the Battlefield series, and its release back in November 2021 was already met with mixed reviews by critics. As the months went on, it was clear that the devs released the game too early, as it was unstable, filled with bugs, and didn’t even have in-game voice chat and all chat, which is a basic feature for most FPS games. It doesn’t help that the game is very pricey, costing around Php2500 ($50) without discounts.
Battlefield 2042 is actually 13th in the list of all-time worst-rated games on Steam (as of February 3), and it was at one point in the top 10 worst games on the platform. One disgruntled fan had this to say as a review for the game on Steam: “I’d rather buy WinRAR.”
EA released a game that is clearly not ready for public access, and as a result, CEO Andrew Wilson finally admitted that the game “did not meet expectations” in the company’s Q3 earnings call. Wilson also talked about how the COVID-19 lockdowns massively affected game development and the resulting product that was released back in November.
“Developing this game with our teams working from home for nearly two years ultimately proved to be challenging,” says Wilson. “Through our process of testing and preparation, we believed the experience was ready to be put in our players’ hands. We launched with strong stability; however, as more players experienced the full game, it became clear there were unanticipated performance issues that we would need to address. Some of the design choices we made with the game also did not resonate with everyone in our community.”
Battlefield 2042 has missed the mark, and EA is trying its best to make up for it. They recently announced Season 1 of the game is delayed to early summer in the United States (around June). According to their announcement, that decision “gives us the time to focus on improving the Battlefield 2042 experience while finalizing the development of our seasonal content to ensure that it all reaches our standard for quality.”
Battlefield fans continue to hope that EA would deliver in their promise to improve the latest installment in the franchise and that the game would reach its full potential.
