Twitter recently announced that it is launching a new feature called Communities that will let its users be part of moderated discussions on certain topics.
“Imagine an alternate timeline where everyone just gets you… say hi to Communities—the place to connect with people who Tweet like you,” according to a post released by the company on September 9.

According to the big social networking service, “some conversations aren’t for everyone, just the people who want to talk about the thing you want to talk about.” So, in these “Communities”, it is possible to not have politics and business posts if all you want to see and talk about are cute photos of cats and dogs.
The company is creating a space where people can talk and exchange ideas about their hobbies and interests whether it’s pets, sneakers, skincare, or even astrology. Users can freely send and receive tweets without being bombarded by out-of-topic posts on their feeds.
This new feature will also let approved users moderate the discussions about fixed topics. Any Twitter user can read and quote-tweet them but users from specific communities can post a tweet exclusively and only members within that community can reply.
In order to harmonize the community, there are general rules and points of discussion. There will also be Twitter marshals who will moderate or even remove a member of the group if their interests do not belong to the community.
In a statement released by Twitter, “Communities” will adapt current Twitter Rules and enforcement actions to keep people safe while using it. This includes developing ways to “proactively identify potentially problematic Communities, new reporting flows, and bespoke enforcement actions.”
“We’ll continue to do research, scenario plan, and work with outside experts including our Trust and Safety Council to keep people safe with Communities.”
Twitter Communities is limited now for users on iOS and web as it is still in beta testing. The company is working on expanding the feature and it will soon be available to Android users too.
