‘Brenaissance’: Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser to return to mainstream movies

Box office hitmaker Brendan Fraser is making a comeback to mainstream movies — and for the fans, this is where the ‘brenaissance’ begins.

In 2018, Fraser ended his long break from the industry and appeared in a few TV shows and movies. He portrayed roles in “Doom Patrol” and “Titans” where he voiced Robotman, as well as in Steven Soderbergh-directed film “No Sudden Move.”

He also starred in the underrated FX drama “Trust” as Fletcher Chase, and while these are prominent characters to take up, we can be sure that Fraser will embark in more future projects that offer more visibility for him.

Our childhood mainstay

In Brendan Fraser’s filmography, his major casting first happened in the 1992 comedy movie “Encino Man” where he played Link Chomovsky, but his career began to flourish when he became the major player in “The Mummy” (1999).

Given his remarkable performance as Rick O’Connell and the commercial success of the movie which grossed over $416.4 million worldwide, his character returned for a sequel in “The Mummy Returns” (2001), and in “The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (2008).

For a versatile actor like Fraser, it was not an impossibility to be placed on the same pedestal as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, who are altogether part of our childhood memories.

‘Brenaissance’ in the box office

In a conversation with podcaster Lindley Key, the 52-year-old actor talked about his upcoming projects including one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in a Martin Scorsese film called “Killers of the Flower Moon”.

Fraser, in true comedic fashion, said he might be sick of having to go up against all those talents, while Key responded with the sincerest message as a fan: “The internet is so behind you! We’re so supportive. There are so many people out there who love you, and we’re rooting for you.”

Humbled by his fans’ support in general, the Canadian star simply said, “Shucks ma’am,” and tipped his cowboy hat.

Now that he’s older and may technically no longer fit the Rick O’Connell archetype, we may be seeing more of Fraser in drama films, one of which is the upcoming movie “The Whale” directed by David Aronofsky, where Fraser plays a 600-pound reclusive teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

Meanwhile, “Doom Patrol” Season 3 will be available for streaming on HBO Max in September.

Brendan Fraser may no longer be the matinee idol in this era, but it seems his new acting ventures are a breath of fresh air, and this perfectly encapsulates why everyone is all set for the ‘brenaissance’.
