Netflix dropped a new trailer for its upcoming film Kate, directed by French film director and visual effects artist Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Woody Harrelson, and Miku Martineau.
According to Netflix, Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a ruthless assassin in Tokyo who was poisoned, and she has less than 24 hours to figure out who had her poisoned and exact revenge.
While there’s some hype for the upcoming film, it also garnered some mixed reactions on Twitter. Many are excited for the film because it will be featuring the Japanese rock band BAND-MAID, and also because they get to see Winstead in action again after her action-packed role as Huntress in Birds of Prey.
Band-Maid's name, literally up in lights. Neon, that is. So happy for them, and I can't wait to see AND hear them in #KateNetflix. Some individual posters to celebrate. First up…Miku Kobato! 🕊️#bandmaid @bandmaid @miku_bandmaid pic.twitter.com/3YF0OXldAH

While some are hyped to see BAND-MAID in this upcoming film, there are some who aren’t too happy about the film’s synopsis. As a film set in Tokyo with a white lead cast, there are those criticizing Netflix for releasing a film with white characters hunting down Asian characters due to stereotypes and fetishization, especially after everything that’s gone down with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Love Winstead. But, stop putting white leads around Asian culture in an Asian city while every antagonist is Asian. And what’s Hollywood’s obsession with the Yakuza like damn.

…So a movie where a white woman beats up and kills Asian people. Yakuza so technically Japanese, though I doubt only Japanese actors were hired for the Yakuza roles. That is the premise of this movie. Enough people thought this was a good idea that we're getting it. Wtf.

Meanwhile, there are others who are also criticizing the film’s plot, but for different reasons. Some are saying that the plot is all too familiar and are comparing it to previous films that have similar plots — John Wick, Crank, and Gunpowder Milkshake, which is another Netflix film that was released a month prior.
