August 6th marks the day of celebration for the internationally beloved alcohol drink: beer. In Filipino culture, beer is definitely an integral part of fun little gatherings. Whether it’s your father hanging out with his workmates, or your friends going crazy on the karaoke machine, this beverage is sure to be the life of the party.
Of course, you need to follow whatever lockdown regulations in place where you are. But if you’re looking to add a bit of flair to your Friday night, here are five cocktail recipes to attempt replicating in your personal festivities for International Beer Day.
1. Ginger Beer Paloma
- 2 ounces tequila
- juice from ½ a fresh lime
- 4 ounces grapefruit juice
- Ginger beer to top
- Ice
Paloma is a tequila cocktail that is traditionally popular in Mexico. It typically consists of tequila, lime and grapefruit soda. Some people also choose to dip the rim in salt. For a Ginger Beer Paloma Cocktail, switch out grapefruit soda with ginger beer. Ginger beers are usually non-alcoholic, but contains a stronger flavor than regular ginger ale.
All you have to do is mix all the ingredients in a highball glass—ginger beer last, add some ice, and you’re good to go!
2. Moscow Mule
- 2 ounces of vodka
- 2 ounces of lime juice
- 4 ounces of ginger beer or ginger ale
- Ice
Swap out that tequila with a nice vodka, and you get Moscow Mule. Arguably one of the most popular bar drinks, this refreshing alcoholic beverage is a classic during the summer or in holiday celebrations.
Add crushed ice into a chilled copper mug. If you don’t have any, a regular glass will do. Copper mugs are mainly used to retain the coolness of the drink for a longer amount of time. Similar with a Ginger Beer Paloma, add all the ingredients with the ginger beer (or ale) last. You may add a lime wedge garnish for that extra Instagram-worthy detail.
3. Spicy Popsicle Cocktail
- Cheap beer (whatever you have)
- Spicy popsicle or a regular popsicle + spice mix
Ever heard of a screw bar-ju (a Korean popsicle and soju combination)? Then this might be the next step for your sweet alcoholic delight. Cocktails typically come with ice and if you’re taking a long time, this would eventually water down your drink. Using popsicles as an alternative not only keeps your drink cold, but it also adds a sweetness to it.
If you already know of a store that sells spicy popsicles, go get a nice supply immediately. Any fruit-flavored popsicle would work though, as long as you add a mixture of cayenne pepper, black pepper, sugar and salt for that spicy kick. Then, simply dip that spruced up ice lolly goodness in whatever beer you have.
4. Beer Can Bellini
- 1 (12-ounce) can of cold Hefeweizen beer (or any other wheat beer)
- 4 ounces of cold peach nectar or juice
Bellini is a classic cocktail that originally uses white wine and a white peach puree. However, any variation of peach-flavored puree, nectar, juice or schnapps is acceptable. This fruity delight can be found served in elegant flutes for brunches due to being low in alcohol content. Replace that white wine with a cold can of beer for a nice little change.
Pour half of the can of beer into a glass, then the peach juice. Serve it cold and add a peach slice as garnish to make it picture-perfect.
5. Apple Pumpkin
- 8 ounces of bourbon
- 8 ounces of apple cider
- 2 ½ ounces of lemon juice
- 12 ounces of pumpkin ale
- Ice
Pumpkin ale is a famous seasonal beer that usually arrives in the fall. Add that with apple cider and a nice bourbon, and you’ve got yourself a classy cocktail to show off during a family gathering. You’re gonna need to do a bit of shaking here, so hope you’ve got something to do it with.
Fill your glasses with ice. Shake the bourbon, apple cider and lemon juice together, then pour it over your ice-filled glasses. Don’t fill it up though! You need some space to put that pumpkin ale in. Pour the beer last and add cinnamon sticks and cranberries if you wanna class it up even more.
