Kim Kardashian’s latest ad for her shapewear Skims was recently called out and went viral on TikTok for a noticeable photoshop fail.
In the ad, Kim stretches the band of her underwear to show elasticity of the underwear as she says “it bounces right back.” She runs her finger down through her waist as her index finger completely deforms proving her waist had been warped.
Through photoshop, advertisers can give celebrities and models tweaks, edit out the unwanted scars, and sculpt unrealistic body types. Excessive photoshop damages teens’ self-esteem and image of the perfect body.
Unrealistic photoshops of the body give a negative impact on the mind of teenagers especially with social media raising concepts and expectations of how a body should look like. In a research conducted by Aparicio-Martinez et al., they stated that the increase of eating disorders had risen in women in their 20s with beauty ideals in which social media was a significant factor.
It’s no surprise that Kim Kardashian’s ad has been receiving criticism online as this generation of young women aim to embrace all types of bodies. Here are a few quick reminders as to why this photoshop fail is a problem.
Every body shape is different
People are born with different body types, so even if people eat the same thing and exercise the same amount, the results will still be different.
As social media pushes unattainable body standards, this puts unnecessary pressure on impressionable audiences to follow the same routines as their favorite influencer or model.
Insecurity among teenagers should be addressed by acknowledging that bodies come in all shapes and sizes—instead of pressuring internet users or teaching them what to eat.
People shared their sentiments on the photoshop fail and how it creates a wrong mindset on body image.
Reminder: Not everything is the entire truth
If this teaches us anything, it’s that not everything on social media paints an accurate picture.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, consider muting or even unfollowing accounts on social media that make you compare yourself to restore your mental health in a positive state.
In line with this, other TikTok users shared positive comments, showing appreciation for the beauty of each woman.
Kim Kardashian has not yet responded regarding her photoshop fail and with the Kardashian’s history of staying silent on issues, she would not likely be addressing this one.
With the negative ideology of photoshop and the concept of the perfect body image in the media, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone is beautiful in their own ways and do not be defined by the standards of social media.
