TikTok is one of the most popular social media networks worldwide. This social media platform has transformed the way the music industry works. It provides an alternative to radio and streaming playlist to showcase viral contents of dance, lip-syncs, comedy skits and other challenges.
Labels are now working with digital influencers and TikTok celebrities to drive traffic to dance challenges, and shifted their attention to discover new talents on the platform.
In the Philippines, TikTok is the biggest driver of current and potential hits. Recently, EZ Mil and Skusta Clee dominated the contemporary pop culture lane with their trending songs on the platform.
“Byahe” by John Roa
John Roa renewed popularity of his underrated 2016 jam “Byahe.” Thanks to an irresistible number of TikTok dance challenges with its infectiously catchy chorus and midtempo production, “Byahe” has become a viral hit.
“Magandang Dilag” by JM Bales
Like “Dalagang Filipina,” “Catriona,” and “Binibini,” the song “Magandang Dilag” also represents Filipina beauties. It was written for the Ms. Universe Philippines pageant, specifically the swimsuit competition. According to songwriter Kiko Salazar, the whole concept came from Jonas Gaffud, the creative director of the pageant. “I want a pop song so that the girls won’t be tense when they walk,” the acclaimed hitmaker said.
“Dance with You” by Skusta Clee (ft. Yuridope)
Skusta Clee is well known for his biggest OPM hits “Pauwi na ko”and “Zebbiana” in the last three years. Now, his “Dance with you” was a record-breaking success. Its official video has reached more than 115 million views in less than three months. On Spotify, it has not left the top 50 Philippines chart ever since it debuted last November 2020. Tiktok made trending dance covers of this song, giving Skusta Clee another opportunity to extend his audience across various digital platforms in the country.
