Which subculture do you belong to?

To be part of social media subculture is often about who you are, where you belong, and what or who you stand for.

Small groups within the social media platforms that emerge are known as a subculture. These communities are formed based on their interests and who they support. To clarify, they are not marketed as official organizations but they give an online identity to people from all over the world.

Subcultures typically give guidelines on how to act, what clothes to wear, and how people express themselves. And to be part of this group of people can help someone a sense of belonging and identity.

The growth of subcultures seems so fast because of social media trends. Social media influences our cultures in many ways. It widens our social awareness in society by interacting with other people and sharing ideas and opinions. Back in the day, subcultures were limited to punk, sporty, artsy, geek, hip-hop, goth, emo, and hipster. Now in the 21st-century, it includes gamer, YouTubers, TikTokers, fandoms among many others.

Now tell us on what subcultures in social media platforms you belong.

Are you an active user on Tiktok? This is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world. Users can create short videos with music, filters, and some other features.

Maybe you belong to the gamer subculture if you are someone who plays video games and joins online competitions like Mobile legends, DOTA, etc. With a variety of platforms and gaming consoles, there is surely a diverse community out there.

If you love binge watching series, immersing yourself in the lore of books, or follow celebrities, you are probably a part of the fandom subculture. Your fandom usually depends on what media and entertainment you typically consume. It doesn’t matter if you’re into Harry Potter or Kdrama, there’s definitely a fandom for all sorts of interests.

These are just a few of social media subcultures. People might find it hard to define the subcultures that exist nowadays, but it is important not to criticize one’s belonging in a group as we all deserve to feel at home with a community.
