Filipino students create innovative solutions at the AIA Philam Life Hackers 2020

Filipino students once again showed how attuned they are to the importance of preparing for the future. At the recently concluded AIA Philam Life Hackers 2020, over 400 students forming 87 teams from 85 schools all over the Philippines came up with technology-driven, innovative and creative solutions that address the competition problem statement: “How do we insure more Filipinos at a faster rate and make our brand promise of helping people live healthier, longer, better lives more concrete?”

The well-deserved award for the Breakthrough in Product/Service Innovation category was bestowed on Team Chicken Wings whose members include Allysa-Nicole Oabel, John Lemuel Melaya, Zhyna Diche, Princess Felicila Cajigal and Shaira Olan. Team Chicken Wings lorded it over the other teams for their winning product/ service innovation proposal billed as “Bente para kay Phiggy” (a clever concept marrying Phi from Philam and Ggy for the ubiquitous piggy bank). This strategy, which the winners admitted, was borne from the notion that: “your P20 can go a long way”. This revolutionary student financial program proposal (in collaboration with different financial institutions) promises protection, security, support and coverage of insurance, student discount, the ability to convert to future assets.

 

“We put ourselves in the shoes of our target audience. Our winning proposal is specifically intended to help the students be at ease and gain financial growth while being protected,” the winning team said as they explained how they centered their recommended solution on their own current financial positions, personal challenges, and the need for future financial progress of all young adults like them.

On the technology side, the winning project for the Breakthrough in Technology category was conferred to Andrea Jane Barua, Alberto Jose Maricaban, Richron Brix Mercado, Kirsten Roberts and John Henry Villa—members of Team FinHackers—for their Philam iLink proposal. Philam iLink is a prototype of their super app, a platform that’s meant to serve financial advisors and existing and potential clients. It has user-friendly features that drive awareness and provide financial education among Filipinos.

Garnering the top prize in the Breakthrough in Marketing Solution category and walking away with P20,000 as runner-up prize in the Technology category, were the Katipunan contingent who teamed up as Team Future Proof, represented by Jemar Luczon, Ron Simon Lomibao, Rachel Vivien Roxas, Crizan Kyle Jureidini and Moreen Elize Agustin from the University of the Philippines Diliman and Ateneo de Manila University.

Future Proof’s team leader said: “With the accelerated shift towards digital, people now incorporate shopping, entertainment, and even billing activities with their mobile apps. With our proposal of a centralized app, our goal is for the application process, product selection, and even Vitality features to be integrated in one single app so people who are curious about Philam will be able to enjoy some of the app’s features even before they purchase anything.”

The teams who cinched the top three spots brought home a cash prize of Php75,000 each.

The runner-up spot in the Product/Service Innovation category who went home with P20,000 was Team Psychology Society composed of representatives from Our Lady of Fatima University—Tracy Anne Pangilinan, Honeylyn Besanes, Raquel Sarah Dimazana, Patricia Gail Po, and Alquin Ignacio. For the Marketing Innovation Runner Up, it was Team 123 from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines with members John Marc Dimailig, Mary Joanne Batuampo, Florence Allaine Belarmino, Recca Jane Illustrisimo and Alvin Malonzo who brought home Garmin fitness devices.

 

In addition to the prizes, all winners will also be given the chance to vie for an internship with AIA Philam Life.

Participants came up with game-changing ideas and innovative solutions that will impact the mindset of their fellow youth, make them rethink, and give value to future protection and security at a swifter pace. Cognizant about how the financial literacy in the Philippines has evidently remained low (with only two percent of Filipino adults able to correctly answer questions on the topic), participating students hammered out creative strategies to help AIA Philam Life better cement its commitment to help give Filipinos healthier, longer, and better lives.

Industry experts such as Accenture Hong Kong Managing Director Nicholas Chen; Edukasyon.ph Marketing and Partnership Leader Grace David; Google’s Organizational Development and Start Up Leader Martin Gonzales; and Canva’s Product Expert Joan Magno, joined by Philam Group mentors and subject matter experts, shared their knowledge on the various aspects of the insurance industry. Participating students shared that they not only had fun, but had a great learning experience, with access to various resources and data that helped in their strategy development.

AIA Philam Life launched this competition in 2019 with a 36-hour on-site hackathon where college students were challenged to come up with solutions for the brand. This year’s AIA Philam Life Hackers 2020 was held from November 27 to December 2, 2020 wrapping up an exciting seven-day virtual event for Gen Zs.
