A police officer from Agawam, Massachusetts, USA, did not think twice to help a pregnant woman deliver her baby at home on New Year’s Day.
The officer, identified as Zach Hall, responded to a call for a woman actively in labor at around 2:45 a.m. on Jan. 1, according to the Agawam Police Department’s Facebook post on the same day.
“Officer Hall quickly responded and helped mom deliver this healthy baby girl,” the police department said. “Congratulations, Mom, Dad, and baby Sophia!”
In a photo the police department shared on Facebook, Hall can be seen in uniform cradling baby Sophia in the family’s home.
Hall described the experience as “unlike anything I’ve ever felt” in an exclusive interview with People magazine on Jan. 1. He also shared he tried to be calm for the couple, who were nervous.
“I feel proud and lucky that I had the opportunity to help this family and their beautiful new baby,” Hall was quoted as saying. “It’s not something many police officers witness.”
Hall added he did not feel nervous when he arrived at the home, but understood the woman was going to give birth any minute when he saw the baby’s father running out of the house.
Hall’s wife and fellow police officer, Melissa, has expressed her pride for her husband.
“He didn’t hesitate to help those parents or their newborn baby and helped bring a new life into this world,” she said in the report. “What a way to ring in the new year!”
As for Hall, he hoped that the special moment would help uplift others. He also praised the parents for their bravery.
“As nice as it is for everyone to acknowledge my actions, it should also acknowledge the bravery of the parents in such a crazy situation,” he added. “We were all in it together, and I couldn’t be happier for them.” /ra
