All Pinoy hearts went beaming with pride and joy as Disney released its heartwarming and sentimental Christmas ad titled “From Our Family to Yours”, in support of children’s charity Make-A-Wish. The three-minute ad certainly lived up to Disney’s tear-jerking reputation as it features Filipino Christmas traditions, family togetherness, and a zing of nostalgia.
The video revolves around two characters, the grandmother (Lola) and the granddaughter. The story begins in 1940 as the Lola, then a child, receives the ever-familiar Mickey Mouse doll for Christmas. Over the years, Mickey became the symbol of the Lola’s childhood which she then passed to her granddaughter in 2005, alongside other Christmas traditions. The connection of the two leads inspired a festive surprise on Christmas morning.
Aside from the Lanterns (Parol), there are several other noticeable details that showcase Filipino culture in the video – The sewing kits placed inside a tin can, the “Mano Po” which is a Filipino tradition to showrespect, a hint of the Simbang Gabi set up, and the word “Lola” on a card atop a cabinet.
Accompanying the video is the track “Love is a Compass” by UK music artist Griff. When asked about the song, Griff said “The lyrics of the track and the story telling in the advert are powerful, and important. The theme of family and loved ones are so front of mind for many of us – especially this Christmas.” She said the song also offered hope to families during the coronavirus pandemic.
The song is currently available for download and proceeds for the rest of 2020 will be donated to Disney’s partner charity Make-A-Wish. Disney fans will also be able to purchase the limited-edition vintage-inspired Mickey Mouse soft doll from The Disney Store and ShopDisney.co.uk.
As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the collaboration between Disney and Make-A-Wish charity, Disney is encouraging families to share their own festive memories on social media using the hashtag #LoveFromDisney. The company has committed to donate to charity for every post shared across Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Disney and Make-A-Wish are hoping that a lot of people will participate in granting life-changing wishes this Christmas season.
