Before the birth of Dance Monkey, Tones and I, who goes by the real name Toni Watson, started her career by playing music in the streets of Byron Bay, Australia. With her unique style of singing, the artist’s career took off in a matter of months and became known worldwide.

Since the song release in May 2019, “Dance Monkey” was shazamed for more than 36 million times, followed by Lilly Wood & The Prick & Robin Schulz’s “Prayer In C (Robin Schulz Radio Edit)” and Passenger’s “Let Her Go,” as the second and third placers respectively. Shazam is a music recognition application owned by Apple with more than 750 million users worldwide.

With its catchy and straight forward beat, it’s no surprise that Dance Monkey has been smashing multiple records and topping several charts since the release. The song reached No. 4 in Billboard’s Top 100 chart, landed at No. 1 in the ARIA Singles chart for 24 weeks and led the Official U.K. Singles chart for 11 weeks, a record for a female solo artist.

“I didn’t have a following when I released ‘Dance Monkey,’ but [Shazam] gave me the opportunity to reach more people and elevate my fanbase, which has all led to creating a career for myself,” she said in a statement to BBC.

In 2019, Tones was awarded with four ARIA Awards and a few other trophies at the 2020 APRA Awards, including the coveted song of the year award.
