Dagyaw: A Virtual Pop-up for National Indigenous Peoples Month by Barefoot Philippines

It’s National Indigenous Peoples Month. What better way to celebrate it by dropping by at Dagyaw?

Barefoot Philippines is a non-profit organization led by Ateneans who advocate for the rights of children living in rural communities. In support of and inspired by UNICEF, Barefoot aims to provide an avenue for the holistic development of children in safe and inclusive environments, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to live a dignified life. As Champions for Children, Barefoot’s purpose is to provide sustainable and contextualized assistance to children in rural communities. Through empowering communities, Barefoot aims to build thriving environments in which children can grow.

Given that Barefoot’s current partner community is Katutubo Village, an indigenous rural community in Porac, Pampanga, it is especially important for the organization to celebrate and empower Indigenous Peoples (IP). In celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Month, Barefoot is hosting Dagyaw, a virtual popup on Facebook that will run from October 12 to October 30 of this year. The event features social enterprises that are centered around empowering Indigenous Peoples and are either in support of or are affiliated with an Indigenous community. Participating brands include: Tagpi, HOME Plush Toys, Kinwa Etnika, Ibah Bags, NIñOFRANCO, and Artisanat Handmade. Aside from promoting a diverse range of products, Dagyaw will include a live session hosted by the Barefoot Goodwill Ambassadors featuring partner businesses. These will be held on October 17, 2020 3-5PM and sign-ups are still ongoing. Register here: https://bit.ly/DagyawSignUps

Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world and number at 370 to 500 million individuals, representing the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. They are also recognized to be the holders of unique languages, knowledge, and beliefs. Most importantly, they possess invaluable knowledge of sustainable management practices for natural resources. Albeit the size of their population and their indispensable knowledge on sustaining the environment, indigenous peoples continue to be confronted by marginalization, indigence, and other human rights violations. Recognizing this, the government celebrates National Indigenous People’s Month every October in hopes of gaining comprehensive knowledge, raising cultural awareness and sensitivity, and nurturing their sustainable development.

In the face of the pandemic, Barefoot has strived to continue providing the Katutubo village with contextualized and sustainable assistance for the holistic development of their children and community. This National Indigenous Peoples Month, Barefoot invites you to join them in empowering and celebrating the lives of indigenous peoples by supporting Dagyaw, the event that is in pursuit of raising awareness on the indigenous peoples’ community and highlighting their importance. By visiting the virtual pop-up, listening to the live session, and supporting featured businesses, you will be able to contribute to the storybooks that will be donated to children of Katutubo village, bringing them one step closer to a brighter future.
