To raise awareness about World Down Syndrome Day last March 21, moms and their children came together to create a heartwarming “Carpool Karaoke” video.
In the video, fifty mothers and their children who have Down Syndrome lip synced and performed Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” through Makaton — a form of sign language that also uses symbols alongside speech and is designed for people who have learning and communication difficulties. Perri herself showed her support for the project and said that she was so “honored they chose [her] song”.

According to BBC, the mothers in the video are all members of Designer Genes, a Facebook group for parents of children with Down Syndrome born in 2013 to 2014. Rebecca Carless, one of the mothers in the video, said that they wanted everyone to see it — to show the fun and life they have with their kids and that they “wouldn’t change a thing”.
“The idea is, we are just normal mums, we love our kids, they love us, and they are just like other four-year-olds, we wouldn’t change them,” Carless told BBC.
The video has since gone viral and people have shown nothing but outpouring love and support for the project.

Even James Corden, who’s known for his popular Carpool Karaoke with celebrities on The Late Late Show, was moved to tears and said that it is “the most beautiful Carpool Karaoke”.

The video reminds people that those who were born with Down Syndrome are just like the rest of us who can have fun, live a normal life, and be special in their own ways. These children with DS are all beautiful and we also wouldn’t change a thing!
