Speech Cup 2018 : “Pandindim: Pagtanaw sa Nakaraan, Pagtahak sa Hinaharap”

Do you still remember the epic poem of Biag ni Lam-ang or the legend of Maria Makiling? This February 17, ten high schools from all over the Philippines will come together at the Cine Adarna, UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman to compete for the University of the Philippines Speech Communication’s (UP SPECA) annual Oral Interpretation and Speech Choir competition. Speech Cup 2018 : “Panindim: Pagtanaw sa Nakaraan, Pagtahak sa Hinaharap” celebrates and reminisces Philippine culture, particularly, arts and literature.

„Panindim‟ is a Filipino word that means an extreme feeling of loss. In this ever- changing world, Filipinos are slowly being stripped off of their cultural identity. Years of colonial rule and the changing times have diminished the influence of culture in the lives of Filipinos. If this persists, there might come a time that Filipinos may no longer remember the epic of Biag ni Lam-ang or the legend of Maria Makiling.

It is now, more than ever, that Filipinos should recognize and preserve its culture. It has been passed on from generation to generation. It is now time for the Filipinos of this generation, the youth, to carry on the tradition. Speech Cup 2018 recognizes the role of the youth in preserving and promoting culture. Through the power of speech and performance art, the youth will become the torchbearers of the rich Philippine culture.

This resonates with UP SPECA’s mission of academic and holistic formation. For 16 years, the organization continues to spread the power of speech through active participation in socio-civic activities within and beyond their University.

Tickets for Speech Cup 2018 : “Panindim: Pagtanaw sa Nakaraan, Pagtahak sa Hinaharap” is priced at PHP 250 (PHP 200 for UP students). You may reserve yours at tinyurl.com/PanimdimTix
