When you take a look at your movie list as a millennial, you will notice one thing in common among most or many of them– romance genre. It’s in a Pinoy’s nature to crave for “sparks,” “feels,” “hugot,” and “kilig” in films. So it’s no surprise if they can easily get hooked for either mainstream or indie film. Although indie films offer a breath of fresh air to new viewers who have been used to mainstream with a more realistic or even new storyline that will also get you thinking hard.

Prior to the box-office success of “Kita Kita,” romantic indie films has once again paved way in the film industry since “That Thing Called Tadhana” last 2015 as one of the highest grossing independent films of all time.

Still it doesn’t mean that indie films containing a hint of romance means that it’s purely a love story. It’s not all cheesy but with complexities as well. There are still a lot of issues, themes and life lessons to tackle along with it in the movie. Below are recent romantic indie films which has a romantic ring with more to offer like Kita Kita.

“Alam mo na yan, inuman tapos may kaibigan kang masyadong nalasing, tapos sinigaw niya yung mga salitang yan.” – Director JP Habac on using the spirit of alcohol as a plot device about the concept of unrequited love.

While it’s true that drunk confessions happen a lot in real life, this is still not your typical romance comedy disguised as a friendship. Breaking rom-com norms is a thing here.

Two college best friends, Maja Salvador as Carson and Paulo Avelino as Dio, go on a road trip before graduation and finally realize what they truly feel for each other.

What if they’re in love? But not with each other?

Don’t be fooled by the premise. This is no ordinary tomboy (Estela) meets gay (Trevor) story who found love like they are an average boy or girl who started off as friends. Director Siege Ledesma expands love boundaries crossing the search for identity and other issues which are not being tackled often in movies.

Shift is not just a mere period of working hours but undergoing a phase in life.

Will gender stop you from loving someone?

The title might got you wondering, just what’s with their story anyway? Because it’s not about a happy ending, rather the story behind the complicated relationship of Sam and Isa.

As it doesn’t start off in the typical getting-to-know each other phase but looks like in the middle of a mutual understanding already, you will be curious as to what lead to this seemingly unhealthy relationship. But the film doesn’t only focus on their love and affection towards each other but who they are outside the relationship as well.
