WATCH: TIME magazine’s latest cover is made from 958 drones hovering in the sky

TIME magazine ditched notable personalities and illustrations as their cover for their latest issue. For the first time in 95 years, the magazine featured an image made by drones.

In partnership with Intel and its Shooting Star™ drones, TIME recreated its iconic logo and red border using 958 illuminated drones hovering in the sky. The latest issue is a special report on “The Drone Age” and how drones are here to stay.

Intel drones which “appear as dots in the sky and can be pre-programmed to create all manner of recognizable shapes and designs,” lit up the night sky in California while Astraeus Aerial Cinema Systems captured the formation.

The project was one of the biggest drone shows ever done in the United States with the cover measuring a height of about 330 feet (100 meters).

“The major challenge of this particular animation is the height at which we have to fly and getting the resolution we want in the Time logo,” said Intel animation lead Tim Heath.

The cover can be found on the June 11 issue of TIME, and will hit newsstands on June 1st.
