Guillermo del Toro and Robert Zemeckis are remaking Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’

A (not-so) new horror film is coming to town, and it will be produced by the legends of Western film.

Remember that movie that scarred you for life as a kid? Because of scenes like this?

Well, Robert Zemeckis, Oscar-award winning director of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future, is reportedly in final negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. It was also reported that Zemeckis will create a version that’s close to the original story of the book.

Guillermo del Toro, also an Oscar-award winning director of films like Shape of Water and Pacific Rim, was originally supposed to take on the seat as director, but due to a conflict of schedule, del Toro will instead produce the film with Alfonso Cuaron, director of Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The 1973 novel is about a seven-year-old boy who encounters witches pretending to be humans. It was previously adapted by Warner Bros. back in 1990 with Anjelica Huston playing as one of the witches. Take a look at this clip:

With several directors like Tim Burton and Wes Anderson who successfully adapted some of Dahl’s novels (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda), there’s no doubt that these big guys will do justice in adapting yet another one of  Dahl’s classics. Hopefully this comes out just in time for Halloween! InqPOP!/Bea Constantino
