A college teacher from Danao, Cebu found what seems to be the perfect way to teach his students a lesson about respect after he caught them studying for a different subject instead of listening to his lecture in class.
Jayson Garces Bayogo has been teaching engineering subjects at the Cebu Technological University – Danao City Campus since 2013. In a now viral Facebook post, he shared an incident that took place in his Dynamics of Rigid Bodies class:
“Last Tuesday, I got interrupted in my class by students murmuring in Spanish. It appears they were studying for their Spanish class (next class after mine) while I’m discussing… A bit pissed off, I stopped my lesson and dismissed the class early,” he wrote.
Not given to expressing anger in class or scolding students, Mr. Bayogo opted for a different, more creative way of getting his students to respect his time. During his next lecture, he decided to drop a surprise quiz on his students— written in Spanish!
That’s right, kids! If you think getting scolded in front of all your classmates is the worst thing that can happen if you get caught doing the same thing these students did, you’re wrong. The subject is hard enough on its own. And to answer questions on Dynamics in a language you barely understand? ¡Ay, Dios mío!

In a short interview with InqPOP!, Mr. Bayogo said that he noticed mixed reactions from the students after they saw the quiz. Some scratched their heads, while others smiled and laughed. Here’s a picture of one clearly confused student shared by the teacher on his post:
“!Ayuadame!”, the students probably thought while the minutes ticked by.
The post has received more than 6,000 reactions and has been shared close to 2,000 times as of this writing. Mr. Bayogo’s coworkers found it amusing as well and have been talking about it non-stop since it was posted.
“My co-instructors thought it was funny and creative… Our dean even asked me to give her a copy of their result. Our Campus Director and Assistant Campus Director loved it. They were laughing hard when they saw the post during our meeting,” he told InqPOP!.
While many people thought the post was hilarious, there were those who saw it as an unnecessary and unreasonable punishment. But the teacher explained that it was not meant as a punishment for his students, but rather as a way to make them understand the importance of respect.
“Scolding is not part of my personal teaching philosophy. I believe that devising a way of teaching my students the valuable lesson of respecting their instructor’s time is better than scolding them,” he said.
At this point, you’re probably wondering how the students did in the exam. We were also curious so we asked Mr. Bayogo about it, but it turns out he has not checked their papers yet. However, he also said that the students have apologized to him for what happened and that he has accepted their apology.
Fair warning to students everywhere: be mindful of how you treat your teachers in class because you just might get a taste of your own medicine.
